Root Canal Treatment

This animation shows how we carry out a root canal treatment — a procedure used to save a tooth when its inner pulp becomes infected or inflamed. This treatment is usually required when there is infection, trauma or deep decay in a tooth.

What’s happening in this Animation?

🦷 Speciality: Endodontics

🛠 Stage: Removing necrotic tissue and disinfection of tooth, sterilising and rebuilding base tooth structures prior to restorative stage

🔀 Alternatives: Extraction

First, we gently access the cavity and remove the damaged tissue. Then, using fine NiTi instruments, we carefully shape and clean the root canals — the narrow pathways that run through the tooth roots.

Once the canals are clean, we seal them with a soft filling material called gutta-percha to help prevent reinfection. Now, it’s good to know that molars and other back teeth often have multiple roots — each with its own complex network of canals — which makes the process more intricate and time-consuming. Precision here is key to long-term success.

Finally, the tooth is restored with a filling to close the access point. In many cases, your dentist may advise placing a crown afterward to help protect and strengthen the tooth, especially if it’s been weakened — though that final step isn’t shown in this animation.
